SOCIAL STUDIES

The first half of the year, students continue the study of world history. We will focus on the European Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Rise of Islam, and civilizations of the Americas using the innovative and engaging History Alive! curriculum.

The second half of the year students survey the history of Washington State. Passing this class is a state requirement for high school graduation. We will explore geography and look at physical, political, and human impacts on the Pacific Northwest.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Language Arts will include a reading and writing program. Reading is divided into two areas, independent reading and a skills based literature program using the Prentice Hall literature series. We will be reading a variety of stories and novels as a class in order to build comprehension. Language Arts skills include spelling, grammar, vocabulary development and various types of writing and reading using Step Up to Writing and Six Traits curriculum. Creative writing and journal writing are part of an ongoing process in class. These assignments will vary throughout the year. We will also practice writing and reading using WASL type prompts and the WASL grading rubric.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Periodic progress reports will be sent home throughout the year to keep both students and parents aware of current progress. Please sign and return promptly. Additional reports can always be requested. No late assignments will be accepted one week after progress reports.
