Definitions/Punishments

 

Before School Detention (BSD): To be served in office or classroom from 7:30-8:00 A.M.

After School Detention (ASD): To be served in office or classroom from 2:35-3:05 PM.

Lunch Detention (LD): Lunch in the ISD room. A sack lunch can be purchased from the cafeteria, but other cafeteria food is not available to students. *If necessary, students assigned a detention will be given the option of a one-day notice.

 

Suspension

A suspension is the temporary removal of the student's privilege to attend classes. Students suspended from shool are not to be on campus during the term of the suspension. They also may not attend any school-related functions during the regular school day or after school on the day(s) of their suspension.

In School Suspension (ISS) Suspension within the school setting.

Short Term Suspension (OSS) 1-10 days of suspension out of school.

Long Term Suspension (OSS) 11 or more days of suspension out of school.

Expulsion Removal from all Olympia Public Schools.

Emergency Expulsion Exceptional misconduct that threatens the safety OSD WMS students will result in immediate removal of the student from school district properties until an appropriate investigation, intervention, and consequences can be determined. At that time, the Emergency Expulsion will be changed to one of the following: short term suspension, long term suspension, or expulsion. These guidelines are based on the Olympia School District Board Policy #5100

Exceptional Misconduct

Certain behaviors constitute a substantial disruption of the educational process and/or pose a serious safety threat to both the students and staff. Participation in such acts will normally result in immediate suspension, emergency expulsion, or expulsion depending on the seriousness and/or repetitiveness of the act. Individual extraordinary circumstances will be considered before a final decision is made.

  1. Fighting.
  2. Possession or control of any dangerous instrument,weapon, or weapon replica.
  3. Possession, sale, use or distribution of drugs (including medications), drug paraphernalia, alcohol, tabacco or any other non-drug substances represented as the real thing.
  4. Physical or sexual assault toward students or staff.
  5. Harassment or intimidating of students or staff.
  6. Continual defiance of authority.
  7. Criminal acts against school personnel or students, which are committed while under the supervision of school authorities.
  8. Any threats of violence by any means, especially firearm or explosives, directed towards WMS, staff or students, will be considered exceptional misconduct and immediate action will be taken.
  9. Promoting or encouraging violence in any way.

 

 

Harassment

Malicious harassment is prohibited and may be defined as any derogatory action or intimidating of another person in a way that is related to a person's race; religion; national origin; gender; sexual orientation; physical, mental, or sensory disability or condition.

 

Gang Affiliation/Activity

Gang affiliation or activity will not be tolerated at WMS. Under authority provided in the Washington Administrative Code 180-40-205,the Olympia School District will impose corrective actions ranging from short-term suspension to expulsion of those WMS students who are gang members or make such claims. Students may forfeit the right to remain in school during the appeal process. Gang affiliation, appearance of gang affilition, or alleging gang membership has been found to be a form of intimidation of the student body and is disruptive to the educational process. WMS further prohibits activities which promote recruiting, invitation, hazing, intimidation, assault and/or related activites to gang affiliation. This includes any apparel, accessories, books, graffiti, and gang signs.
