What is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a nationwide reading incentive program where students, who love to read, can compete. This optional program is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Interested students form teams of 3-5 players. Team members collectively read all twelve titles handed down by the Battle of the Books committee. Then, in game-show format, teams "battle" against each other, identifying the title of the book and the author of the clues given by the host. In tournament style, winning teams advance until we have an All-School winner. The Washington Middle School winner earns the right to battle against the winning teams from Griffin, Jefferson, Marshall, and Reeves middle schools. The winning school captures the traveling trophy to take back to their school for the next year.
Our winning team this year was "Abductor Pollicis Longus" who won in a very close championship battle against "Carpe Diem." The team is made up of triplets, 8th graders Catherine, Kimberly & Samantha. The sisters went on to capture the District traveling trophy when they won the battle against Griffin, Jefferson, Marshall and Reeves middle schools. Come check out the trophy in the library!
