What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a nationwide reading incentive program where students, who love to read, can compete.  This optional program is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Interested students form teams of 3-5 players. Team members collectively read all twelve titles handed down by the Battle of the Books committee.  Then, in game-show format, teams "battle" against each other, identifying the title of the book and the author of the clues given by the host.  In tournament style, winning teams advance until we have an All-School winner.  The Washington Middle School winner earns the right to battle against the winning teams from Griffin, Jefferson, Marshall, and Reeves middle schools.  The winning school captures the traveling trophy to take back to their school for the next year.

32 Teams have signed up!  Please place holds on the books you need or look to borrow from friends and other libraries.

Important Dates:

February 22 - Practice Questions will be available for check-out.  This gives you a good flavor of the types of questions that will be asked.  It also gives you a sense of how prepared your team is for the completion.

March 17 - This is the deadline to have all twelve books read.  Remember that you need to "prove" you read the book by passing an Accelerated Reader test on your book.  Please record your results in the blue binder.

March 20 -  Battle of the Books battles will begin this week.  The number of days it will take to declare a winner is dependent on the number of teams that qualify.

March 30 - Our championship team will battle against the championship teams from Griffin, Jefferson, Marshall, and Reeves at Griffin.  The time will be announced at a later date, but will likely be around 6 pm so that family and friends may attend.
