I have been teaching for at least 27 years, I'm sure. The first ten at Chinook Middle School in Lacey, and the rest here at Washington Middle School in Olympia. Eons ago (I'm exaggerating only slightly), I received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Chemistry minor at Eastern Montana College in Billings, MT. Shortly thereafter and several hundred miles later, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from The Evergreen State College, here in Olympia. In 2002, I completed a Masters degree in Science Inquiry, and in 2009 completed the process for National Board of Professional Teachers (NBPTs) certification in Early Adolescent Science: I am board (bored) certified!?
Beyond teaching I spend my time enjoying the outdoors. One of my most recent excursions was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Snoqualmie Pass to Canada - logging 220 miles. In past years I have been an avid rock and mountain climber, but now enjoy getting out into the wilderness during the summer and winter months backpacking or skiing. I enjoy traveling and studying nature. I have been to Europe, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in Africa, Costa Rica, Peru, and most recently, Ecuador. However, my most favorite place for wildlife is Yellowstone National Park, especially in winter when there is a very good possibility for seeing wolves.
Other pastimes include reading, gardening, birding, taking care of my pets (goats, dogs, cats) and riding my new commuter bike.
I am looking forward to a great year of science inquiry and robot design with my amazing students. Please don't hesitate to contact me via e-maiil, phone, or a note with your student.
