Students will learn to manage their time, organize, prioritize, complete work on time and with accuracy, and use their agendas.
If students use their time well in class, they should have less homework. Just because a student has a study skills class does not mean they will not have homework. We can usually finish block or math. Students will need a library book each day just in case they finish all of their work.
I can provide time, materials, instruction, and encouragement. I cannot make a student do the work. This is ultimately their choice. I check often with teacers and inform students of missing work. I call home regularly if work is not being completed so that a new plan can be developed.
Study skills is taught last period of the day. Students, with my assistance, will learn how to judge how much work can be completed in class and what is left to complete each night. Study skills is also a good time to work on long term projects and study for tests.
Please check your child's agenda each night. They should be able to show you the completed work filed correctly in their binder. If they can't, my guess would be that it is an assignment that still needs to be completed that night. They also need to develop a checklist and be sure they have all of the supplies and assignments that they will need for the next day. Cleaning bags and binders a few times a week is also helpful. These skills, completed the night before, make for a much happier morning and a successful school day.
