The Battle of the Books will officially kick-off on Wednesday, December 9th and conclude with the in-school battles to be held sometime in mid-March.  The winning team will compete against the winning teams from Reeves, Marshall, and Jefferson middle schools on Wednesday, March 31st via Zoom.

  •  Teams consist of 3 – 5 students.  Teams fill out a sign-up form complete with their team name
  •  Six copies or more of each book are available from our library.  Their check out will be limited to 14 days – no renewals will be allowed, in order to keep the books circulating between all of the battle participants.
  • For teams to qualify to compete on battle day, quizzes (with a score of at least 60%) must have been taken for each book by at least one member on each team.  Quizzes are linked on the Library webpage.
  • Reading will be done on the student’s own time.  Groups are encouraged to keep an open communication with each other to get organized.  Beginning Wednesday, February 3rd, practice questions will be made available using Quizlet.  These will be posted on the library website and in the Battle of the Books Schoology group.
  • The qualification deadline is Friday, March 5.  All books must be read and quizzes passed by this date in order to compete in the tournament.
  • All battles will take place via Zoom meetings to keep all students safe!

Why should I sign up?

  •  Let’s face it --- we miss doing things with classmates!  Battle of the Books gives you a chance to join with other students to work towards a shared goal!
  •  The Battle of the Books gives you a chance to read some great books that you wouldn’t otherwise choose or know about
  • This program gives you a chance to participate in a nationwide program which is sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians and has been going on for over 30 years.  Join the hundreds of students across the nation reading the same books.
  • Normalcy!  That’s what we crave!  It’s nice to know that all extracurricular activities aren’t cancelled!
  • All teams that qualify for the Battles will receive participation ribbons, a chance to earn a medal, and maybe compete against the other middle schools in our District in a “sport” you love – READING!
